My Ideas

on improving the Union

I think our Union already has an amazing variety of clubs, societies and events on offer, so as DPCS the most important thing for me would be getting people involved. My manifesto below sets how I want to achieve this, but I also want to hear any great ideas that you have!

Freshers Events Site
Each year at the Freshers Fayre everyone end up with bags full off flyers, sweets and pens, but it's easy to miss the clubs you were always curious about or lose that special flyer in the mountains of paper and free goodies. I would like to set up a centralised website with all of the club-run events in the first few weeks so that you can search for your club and see when and where they're meeting, or even just check out what's going on each night if you've got nothing else planned!
Inventory Sharing
Sadly, the Union will be facing spending cuts this year and it is likely that a lot of these cuts will hit potential equipment purchases. Each year clubs produce an inventory of their assets and I would like to make this inventory public and searchable for other clubs so that if, say, Cheese Soc want a toaster and ICSE have one, they just need to search online and they can ask the club directly. Hopefully this will streamline a lot of equipment purchases and save money for your clubs!
More multi-club / CSC events
ArtsFest and International Night are fantastic examples of these type of event that already work really well but I think it could be taken a lot further. It would be amazing to have some kind of Sports Day for Imperial organised with the ACC, as well as more inter-society events such as the Cheese and Wine night held throughout the year.
Buddy System for Clubs
Clubs who struggle to get going at the start of the year deserve much more help to get the members and resources they need to serve the student body effectively. Due to poor handovers or committee issues, which take time to resolve, clubs are paralysed at the most exciting time of the year. Of course for clubs with no committed members, dissolution is the best option, but I would propose a Buddy System for clubs with committed members who are dedicated to the success of their club. I would like to pair struggling clubs with "good clubs" with similar interests who would be able to offer advice, support or even joint events in order to keep clubs running who would otherwise be forced into dormancy.
Union events
Everyone agrees that music at the Union urgently needs improvement and I think that the best way to do this is to let the students have more of a say. I would particularly like to see encouragement for more clubs to take responsibility for nights where the entertainment can reflect what their members and the student body as a whole look for in a night out.
Keep improving Art Imperial
Jenny has been working really hard this year to get the Arts more funding and resources. I want to continue this so that even people who've never been involved before can get stuck in! We have a fantastic range of orchestras, choirs and much, much more that will only go from strength to strength with a better funding and management framework.

So, now you know how I want to improve your Union please go online to vote.
